AETHER Nordic has joined the GCE Blue Maritime Cluster with a clear mission: to build solutions that people actually need, not just what you think they need. The Norwegian startup is developing a navigation system designed to keep ships moving safely even when satellite signals fail.

We met co-founder Therese Frostad and CTO Jørgen Haavind Jensen at the event “BAE Systems Presents the New Frigate Program in Ålesund – Strong Opportunities for Norwegian Industry.”.

The BAE Industry Day seminar, hosted by BAE Systems and the GCE Blue Maritime Cluster, offered companies a chance to explore new opportunities and collaborations within the maritime and defense industries. We asked Therese and Jørgen why they wanted to join the cluster.

When developing the right product, you want to engage with potential users as early as possible to ensure you’re creating something they truly want. ¨Within the defense sector, however, this is often difficult, much of the information is classified, and there’s always the possibility that similar solutions already exist.¨

AETHER Nordic specializes in satellite-independent navigation systems for maritime vessels. Their technology is resilient, interference-proof, and highly accurate, designed to ensure safety and reliability even in the world’s most demanding waters. Their mission is to deliver innovative and dependable solutions that enhance the safety and efficiency of maritime operations in challenging environments. By advancing navigation technology, AETHER aims to safeguard global shipping, and contribute to a more secure fleet.

"It’s about being part of what’s happening, like being invited to pitch for BAE Systems. There are many relevant participants in the cluster: suppliers, shipping companies, and shipyards."

Therese Frostad, Co-Founder

AETHER sees the cluster as a hub for innovation, participating in research projects across Norway and even influencing them. The cluster fosters collaboration not only nationally but also with the ambition to establish EU-wide projects, Therese explains.

When asked about their goals for an event like this, Therese highlights the opportunities ahead:

"There’s a lot of exciting activities in the maritime cluster. The Norwegian shipyards capable of building military vessels are in the cluster and there is a lot of expertise. The fact that Kongsberg’s newly established division for standardized vessels is also being set up here underlines this. That means there are many relevant people to connect with—people who care about what’s happening in the industry."
